Speech and language disorders we treat
Early Childhood Language Development
Children that are not meeting anticipated developmental milestones may be struggling to effectively communicate wants and needs. Speech and language intervention can help these children and their families meet their communication goals.
Speech Articulation Disorder Including Lisps
A speech articulation disorder is a type of communication disorder in which an individual has difficulty producing certain speech sounds, often making their speech challenging for listeners to understand. This can potentially lead to frustration. People with lisps have difficulty producing certain consonant sounds, often /s/ and/z/ sounds.
Expressive and Receptive Language Disorder
A receptive language disorder is a communication disorder in which the individual has difficulty processing and understanding language. An expressive language disorder is a communication disorder in which the individual struggles to use language to communicate their wants, needs, and emotions.
Aphasia
Aphasia is an acquired language disorder resulting from a stroke or head injury in which the affected individual has difficulty understanding or using written and/or spoken language.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability with no known etiology. ASD is typically identified in early childhood. Individuals with ASD may struggle with communicating and understanding language as well as engaging in social interactions.
Stuttering
Stuttering is a communication disorder that interrupts the natural flow of speech. Those who stutter may repeat speech sounds, syllables, words, or phrases, prolong elements of words, or experience unintentional stoppages within their speech (blocks).
Dysarthria
Dysarthria is a motor-speech disorder in which the muscles used for speech are weakened or the affected individual has difficulty controlling them. Dysarthria often causes slow or slurred speech.
Literacy
An individual’s readiness to read is predicted by their early language skills including oral language development, expressive and receptive vocabulary, and phonemic awareness. Deficits in these areas may adversely impact a child’s ability to read.
